Be thorough in preventing the spread of norovirus! – Let’s prevent it! Food poisoning due to norovirus

Infectious gastroenteritis and food poisoning due to norovirus occur all year round, but are particularly prevalent in winter.
Norovirus infects humans via hands and food and causes such symptoms as vomiting, diarrhea, and stomachache. It can be severe in children and the elderly. Follow the basics to prevent food poisoning.

The basics of preventing food poisoning due to norovirus are thorough hand washing and proper cooking!

Thorough Handwashing

Handwashing is most important for preventing food poisoning. Before food preparation and eating and after using the toilet, you should wash your hands by getting up a good lather with the soap and rubbing and rinsing thoroughly with water. Washing twice is even more effective.

Proper Cooking

Norovirus builds up in the internal organs of bivalves such as oysters and clams, so they can cause food poisoning if eaten raw or half-cooked. Be sure to heat through to the center when cooking. Heat to a core temperature of 85°C-90°C for at least 90 seconds as a guide.

Disinfection of Cooking Utensils

Use sodium hypochlorite (chlorine bleach) for disinfection. Alcohol and invert soap are not very effective.
