~Strategy for building up health of City residents; “Arukita” (Local Walking) points project~

Project Overview (Background & Purpose)

“Kita City Healthy Town 21 (2nd stage) the Latter Five-Year Plan” formulated in March, 2019 has been promoting efforts for increasing the number of steps and the physical activity amount in daily lives. Walking is a concrete means to increase the number of steps and the physical activity amount in daily lives. However, only about 25% of the Kita City residents walk more than 7,000 steps on average in one day.
Kita City government has been trying to provide walking information and promoting efforts for increasing the number of steps in daily lives among all the generations by holding Walking events, making “Kita City Walking Courses Guide”, and distributing them in various walking events, etc.
In addition, we have been implementing “Arukita (Local Walking) Point Project” utilizing a smartphone application for continuously supporting the residents to keep acting for their health consciously.

Arukita (local walking) Point Project
In order to raise the awareness of building up health of the working generations, we have been implementing this project to give them an “opportunity” to get interested in their health and to help them to make it a daily habit to do exercise as a “continuous support” by utilizing a smartphone application. You can receive points for the number of steps you take in a day and for participation in city-hosted courses and events. You can use your points to enter into raffles for prizes.
Points are awarded between June 1 and November 30, 2020.
For the next point acquisition period, we will let you know in a "arukita" app, etc.
Function of the application
  1. You can gain your points just by walking.
  2. You can record your weight and blood pressure every day, and can record medical check-ups you had in this year.
  3. Counts the number of breaks (the number of times you stand up and move your body the prescribed number of times within a certain amount of time) in order to prevent excess sitting.
  4. Display the number of steps taken, distance walked, calories burned, number of breaks taken, weight, and blood pressure in a graph, and display monthly averages(latest values for blood pressure).
  5. Information on 12 city-recommended walking courses by area.
Additional information on five courses by theme.
  6. Receive articles on health.
  7. Notifications from Kita City are delivered.
  8. Check your ranking of walking steps by gender, by age and in all.
  9. You can enter into raffles for prizes based on the number of points you've accumulated.

Reviews of Participants

Walking Event

  • My metabolic rate was getting lower and lower through lack of exercise. For that reason, I feel delighted that I can walk a course which I usually do not walk and enjoy watching cherry blossoms at the same time. (Participants, in twenties and thirties)
  • As I do not have much opportunity to do walking exercise, I am always looking forward to participating in the two events every year; Cherry Blossom Walk and Waterfront Walk. It's thanks to these volunteers. I appreciate their efforts to inform me of these events and encourage me to join. Thank you so much. (Participants, in forties and fifties)

Arukita (local walking) Point Project

  • I started to become aware of the number of steps and taking exercise. Once I start to pay attention in “how much longer I should walk before I gain my points,” I feel like trying harder to walk more. (Female, in her thirties)
  • There are a variety of walking courses in Arukita and I enjoyed them a lot. It helped me rediscover the charms of Kita City. I’m working on walking all of the courses. (Male, 30 years old)

Comments from the Person in Charge

Walking Event

  • Enjoy walking while taking in cherry blossoms in full bloom in spring and refreshing breezes in fall. Walks were suspended in fiscal 2020 to prevent the spread of COVID-19, but now course guides for the walks have been created and distributed to various facilities in the city so that you can have fun walking while taking measures to prevent infection.

Arukita (local walking) Point Project

  • The project of the walking application “Arukita” has been implemented in order that “mainly the working generations in their prime who have a few opportunities to take exercise” can utilize the application in their smartphones which they use every day and get interested in building up their health. We hope that the application can be used by more people in the future and can give them an opportunity to build up their health.
